Published:

The Lagos State Government has addressed the sudden collapse of a classroom wing at Odokekere High School in Ikorodu, describing the event as “sad news”.

A press release. Issued by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), on Friday, the government said it was quick to provide relief to anxious parents and guardians.

Government officials confirmed that despite the structural failure, the safety of the children remained uncompromised. They stated clearly that “no casualty was recorded at the building collapse,” adding that “All of our students are in perfect condition.”

According to the SCRPS, the bungalow block was already slated for decommissioning. The site had been identified for a total overhaul to provide “a befitting classroom edifice that will accommodate the huge population of students in the school.”

In light of the incident, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has intervened to prevent any gap in the students’ education. He issued an executive order for the immediate relocation of affected pupils to nearby schools to ensure their academic schedule remains uninterrupted.

A technical team from the SCRPS is now preparing for an on-site evaluation. This assessment will allow the administration to “work out modalities, to begin immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block, that will accommodate the huge population in the school.”
