Wolverhampton Wanderers have thrown their weight behind their Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare who suffered racist abuse from fans for missing a penalty kick on Sunday.
Wolves descried their disgust at the racist messages directed at the 25-year-old striker via a strong message on the club’s website.
“Wolves are disgusted by numerous instances of racist abuse, from multiple perpetrators, directed at Tolu Arokodare on social media following today’s fixture against Crystal Palace.”
“There is no place for racism – in football, online, or anywhere in society. We condemn this abhorrent and unlawful behaviour in the strongest possible terms.”
Arokodare joined Wolves in the summer in a highly celebrated transfer move, but a return of two goals, with the club sitting last in the EPL table has put the bulky striker under pressure.
He had a chance to increase his goals tally and possibly secure a rare Wolves win against an off-form Crystal Palace, but his penalty was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Dean Henderson, leading to racist messages in his social media account by fans after Palace secured an unlikely victory with a late goal.
The club has, however, declared their full support for Arokodare, suffering racist abuse a day after Wesley Fofana received similar messages for receiving a red card in Chelsea’s draw with Burnley.
“Tolu has our full and unwavering support. No player should be subjected to such hatred simply for doing their job.
“We stand firmly alongside him, and alongside all footballers who are forced to endure this abuse from anonymous accounts acting with apparent impunity.”
