Terrahaptix raises $22m to scale African drone manufacturing push

Published:

Nigerian autonomous security company Terrahaptix has secured an additional $22 million in funding, underscoring rising global investor interest in homegrown defence and surveillance technologies across Africa.

The Abuja-based startup is ramping up production of its drone and infrastructure protection systems to meet growing demand from government and military clients.

The funding round was led by US venture capital firm Lux Capital, with participation from Resilience17 Capital, an investment vehicle founded by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola. Existing investors, including 8VC and Nova Global, also doubled down on their commitments in a round the company said was completed in less than two weeks.

The latest injection follows closely on the heels of an earlier $11.8 million raise, bringing total recent funding to over $33 million. The back-to-back raises signal a strong appetite for African-built defence technology at a time when countries across the continent are prioritising counterterrorism, border surveillance, and critical infrastructure security.

Chief Executive Officer Nathan Nwachukwu described the round as oversubscribed, noting that the company initially set out to raise a much smaller amount. He said the accelerated close reflected investor conviction in Terrahaptix’s manufacturing capabilities and its expanding contract pipeline.

The company plans to channel the new capital into scaling its Abuja manufacturing facility, targeting an annual production capacity of 40,000 drones. The expansion is expected to significantly boost its ability to fulfil defence and public sector contracts across multiple African markets.

Beyond its current plant, Terrahaptix is preparing to commence construction of a second, large-scale defence manufacturing facility at an undisclosed location. The proposed megafactory is intended to support anticipated long-term demand and deepen its engineering and research workforce.

Nwachukwu said the expansion is aimed at positioning Africa as a competitive player in autonomous security systems. According to him, the fresh capital will accelerate efforts to equip governments with advanced tools for counterterrorism operations and infrastructure protection, strengthening the continent’s technological self-reliance in critical security sectors.
