Abia State Governor Alex Otti has directed the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, and the Abia State Civil Service Commission to adjust the promotion of teachers who scored up to 60 per cent in their promotion examinations and interviews.
He made it clear that the education bodies cannot raise the pass mark above the 60 per cent that was originally advertised before the promotion examinations commenced.
A concerned Abia citizen, Chukwu Emeka Kalu, had appealed to Governor Otti to intervene, alleging that ASUBEB raised the pass mark for promotion from 60 per cent to 75 per cent, a move he claimed had left many teachers frustrated.
Responding to the issue during his monthly media chat on Tuesday, Governor Otti said he had resolved the matter by directing ASUBEB and the Abia State Civil Service Commission to revert to the 60 per cent pass mark.
The governor, who said he issued the directive a few days before Christmas, assured the affected teachers that adjustments to their promotions would be announced in the coming days, followed by corresponding adjustments to their salaries.
He criticised the education body for announcing a pass mark even before the examinations were conducted.
“I have solved the problem and I have taken that up with the civil service commission and ASUBEB to say that you don’t set a pass mark before an exam.
“So having advertised earlier that the pass mark is sixty, I have approved that they should go back, and that happened a few days before Christmas,” Otti said.
Otti also expressed delight that his administration recently restored electricity to 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area after nine years, adding that efforts are ongoing to restore power to Ohafia and Bende communities in the state.
