Explosives suspected to have been planted by fleeing bandits have been discovered in Ganaru community in Zugurma district of Mashegu local government area of Niger State.
A source in the village told LEADERSHIP that the explosives were planted on the foot path of farmers, who saw them yesterday and raised the alarm.
The chairman of Mashegu local government, Jibrin Egade confirmed that the council received the report and the area was condoned to protect the people from the likely explosion that could lead to casualties.
He expressed dismay over the discovery saying that ” such dangerous explosives in that community where there is no security challenges was surprising to me and the people”.
The chairman said he has informed the security agencies on the matter and awaiting their report.
The Niger State Commissioner of police CP Adamu Elleman confirmed the development, adding that the command deployed bomb experts to the scene to ascertain and possibly detonate the explosive which he said was one not three as claimed by the villagers.
He urged the people to go about their legitimate businesses without fear of intimidation just as experts have been deployed to ensure the evacuation of the explosive device professionally.
