Sokoto State Launches Major Water Project, Promises More

Published:

Sokoto State has taken a significant step toward solving its water crisis. On Monday, Governor Ahmed Aliyu officially opened one of six new township water supply schemes in the state capital, a project designed to drastically improve access to clean water for residents.

The inauguration ceremony at the Old Airport area marked the activation of a water scheme capable of supplying three million gallons daily. This initiative is part of a larger effort by Governor Aliyu’s administration to complete and revitalize critical water infrastructure projects initially started by former Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

A Promise Fulfilled: 40 Million Gallons Daily Anticipated

Once all six schemes are completed, they are expected to deliver a combined total of 40 million gallons of water per day. The entire project carries a total cost of N14.1 billion.

Speaking at the event, Governor Aliyu described the newly inaugurated scheme as a “promise fulfilled” and a major milestone in his administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Sokoto residents. He highlighted the severe water scarcity his administration inherited, where residents were forced to pay as much as N300 for a single jerrycan of water due to collapsed supply infrastructure and a lack of treatment chemicals.

“We took drastic action immediately to restore normal supply,” Governor Aliyu stated. He noted that his administration has replaced outdated equipment and secured alternative power sources for the state water board to overcome challenges posed by unreliable electricity.

Strategic Locations for Maximum Impact

The six water schemes under this ambitious initiative are located in Tamaje, Old Airport, Gagi, Mana, Runjin Sambo, and Ruga Liman. These locations were strategically chosen based on their population density and the urgent need for improved water access.

Governor Aliyu extended his gratitude to Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni for attending the inauguration, emphasizing his presence as a “mark of true friendship and solidarity.” He also commended the contractors, engineers, and community leaders for their dedication in successfully executing the project.

Addressing the public, Governor Aliyu declared, “To the good people of Sokoto, this is your victory, your progress. With your continued support, we will achieve even greater heights.”

The event was well-attended by top government officials, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and enthusiastic residents, underscoring the importance of the project to the community.
