The Sokoto State Government has approved ₦1 billion for its 2026 Ramadan feeding initiative, with plans to provide 34,000 plates of food daily to vulnerable residents across the state.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu launched the programme on Sunday at the History Bureau in Sokoto, describing it as a vital social intervention to ease the burden on fasting Muslims and promote compassion, unity, and community support during the holy month.
Aliyu explained that the number of feeding centres had been expanded from 155 to 170 following public demand, with each centre catering to about 200 beneficiaries at a time.
“I can assure you all that the meals will be hygienic, well-packaged, and of high quality. Ad hoc staff have been engaged to ensure smooth operations throughout Ramadan,” the governor said.
He added that the initiative was part of broader efforts to promote Islamic values and social welfare, including mosque and school rehabilitation and monthly allowances for Jumu’ah mosques. Aliyu urged religious organisations, philanthropists, and the public to complement government efforts by supporting the less privileged.
The programme, first introduced 19 years ago under former Governor Aliyu Wamakko, has reportedly continued to provide relief to thousands of residents.
Chairman of the Ramadan Feeding Committee, Aliyu Attahiru, assured that logistics were in place to guarantee transparency and effective service delivery.
Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Jabir Maihulla, urged committee members to carry out their duties with sincerity and discipline, while Malam Yahaya Na Malam Boyi, representing the Sultan of Sokoto, commended the governor’s commitment and pledged royal support and prayers.
The launch event drew government officials, lawmakers, traditional rulers, Islamic scholars, and community leaders, and concluded with the distribution of food items to designated centres, marking the official start of the 2026 Ramadan feeding programme.
