The Rivers State Government has restated its unwavering commitment to the welfare of its workforce, following the approval and payment of a N100,000 Christmas bonus to all civil and public servants, as well as pensioners on the state government payroll.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently authorised the payment, marking the third consecutive year the administration has extended the Christmas bonus since assuming office.
The reaffirmation came in response to comments by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Rivers State Council, Alex Agwanwor, who commended the governor for the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of responsive and worker-friendly governance.
Reacting to the commendation, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo, said the bonus, “which has become an annual ritual enjoyed by civil and public servants on the payroll of the state government, is a token of appreciation for the dedication to service shown throughout the year.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Publications in the ministry, Chris Davies, Sirawoo stressed that the governor remains committed to proactive policies that provide a social safety net for state employees and their families, especially in view of prevailing economic pressures.
He noted that the state government regards the NLC not merely as a labour union but as a vital partner in the “Rivers First” development agenda.
The statement added that the NLC’s public acknowledgement of the gesture is a testament to the harmonious relationship between the present administration and the labour union.
Sirawoo further described public servants as the greatest pride of the state, reaffirming the administration’s resolve to prioritize their welfare.
He added, “While this bonus serves to brighten the festive season, our long-term goal remains the consistent improvement of the working environment and the welfare of every individual serving Rivers State.”
