The political crisis in Rivers State reached a boiling point on Friday as the House of Assembly formally called upon the Chief Judge of the state to inaugurate an investigative panel.
The goal of the panel is to probe allegations of gross misconduct leveled against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
This move follows a unanimous vote by the assembly members, signaling a definitive escalation in the ongoing friction between the executive and the legislature.
The decision was preceded by a live press conference in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers leveled sharp criticisms against the Governor. The House leadership accused Fubara of attempting to use “blackmail” as a political tool.
Addressing journalists, the Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, took a firm position on the Governor’s leadership, stating that Fubara lacked the trust needed to address the crisis rocking the oil-rich state.

The lawmakers grounded their actions in the legal framework of the nation, asserting that:
– The Governor had repeatedly infringed on the 1999 Constitution.
– The parliament was left with no other choice but to apply their legislative power by impeaching him from office.
– Both the Governor and his deputy had allegedly resorted to intimidating the parliament.
Despite the internal strife, the lawmakers took a moment to acknowledge federal efforts, as they thanked President Bola Tinubu for wading into the crisis.
In a significant turn of events, the unity of the impeachment movement was bolstered by internal shifts. Four members of the House, who had previously advocated for a “political solution” through various press statements, officially recanted their positions. They have now declared their support for the impeachment process to continue.
Following these declarations, the lawmakers moved to the chambers to commence an official parliamentary session.
During the plenary, the House voted as a single bloc to authorize the investigation. Following the tally, Speaker Martin Amaewhule officially called on the Chief Judge to act.
“This voting clearly shows the decision of the House,” Amaewhule declared while calling on the Chief Judge of the state to set up an panel of investigation.
