Ribadu tackles El-Rufai over ‘odourless poison’ claim, drags ex-gov to DSS

Published:

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has directed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to provide evidence supporting his allegation that the office procured thallium sulphate, a highly toxic chemical compound, for investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Thallium sulphate is a colourless, odourless substance that can be lethal even in small doses.

In a letter dated January 30, 2026, El-Rufai had written to NSA Nuhu Ribadu, alleging that about 10 kilograms of the chemical were sourced from a supplier in Poland. ONSA responded, denying the claim and requesting El-Rufai to submit any evidence he might have to the DSS.

A follow-up letter dated February 13, 2026, signed by Brigadier-General OM Adesuyi on behalf of the NSA, reiterated that ONSA had neither procured nor initiated any process to purchase the chemical.

“ONSA has neither procured nor initiated any process for the purchase of such material, and has no intention of doing so. However, the allegation has been formally referred to the DSS for a comprehensive investigation. Your Excellency and other parties involved, who may possess relevant information relating to this claim, will be duly invited by the Service to provide any evidence that may assist in establishing the facts,” Adesuyi wrote.

Delivery of the response to El-Rufai’s Abuja residence was initially delayed, as security operatives reportedly refused to accept the document on Friday. It was eventually received and signed for on Sunday.

The development comes amid El-Rufai’s recent claims that he accessed an intercepted phone conversation in which Ribadu allegedly directed security operatives to arrest him.
