Police report major crime reduction in Kano

Published:

The Kano State Police Command has reported significant success in reducing crime across the state in the first quarter of 2026, following the introduction of new strategies and strengthened collaboration with stakeholders.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, the Police Public Relations Officer, Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, stated that the command’s efforts are already yielding results.

CP Bakori noted a marked decrease in criminal activities in the state, highlighting several key achievements during the period.
Among these successes is the containment of thuggery, locally known as Fadan Daba, through the police operation tagged Operation Kukan Kura.

The command also reported preventing the spread of bandit activities into Kano through joint efforts with the state government and other security agencies.

Similarly, it reported progress in resolving long-standing clashes between farmers and herders through community-based approaches.

Additionally, several suspects linked to armed robbery, kidnapping, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and thuggery have been arrested and prosecuted.
Officers also recovered stolen property and other valuable assets during operations.

On the use of technology, the Commissioner of Police said: “Using open-source intelligence, we have identified suspected drug dealers and are currently profiling them with a view to taking a decisive action.”

He added: “I am pleased to announce that we have received over 2,000 names of suspected drug dealers, with some names appearing multiple times. We are currently verifying these names and will take action soon.”

CP Bakori explained that the command recently underwent restructuring to improve efficiency and service delivery, enabling officers to respond more effectively to emerging security threats.

He said the police roadmap for 2026 focuses on community policing, intelligence-led operations, personnel training, improved cybercrime response, and closer cooperation with other security agencies. Public awareness campaigns and targeted operations are also integral to the strategy.

“While we have made significant progress, we acknowledge that there are still challenges ahead,” he said, adding that the command will continue working with relevant stakeholders to address them.

In his closing remarks, he reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safety, stating that the police will continue working to ensure Kano remains secure for both living and business activities.
