Police arrest five suspects over alleged murder in Bayelsa

The Nigeria Police, Bayelsa Command, has arrested five suspects over the alleged murder of a youth in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

The deceased was identified as Samuel Ofiri, 38, a native of Otuoke Community, Ogbia L.G.A.

This is contained in a statement made available to journalists by the command’s spokesman, DSP Musa Mohammed, on Tuesday in Yenagoa.

Mohammed said that on Feb. 22, the Kolo Police Division received a distress call at about 3:30 p.m. and operatives swiftly mobilised to Kakatar Road, in Otuoke and found a lifeless male body.

He said that the corpse was removed and deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Otuoke.

“Upon a sting operation by the operatives, five suspects were arrested at Kakatar Road, Otuoke Community, in connection with the death of the deceased.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased was allegedly accused of raping a lady and was taken to an apartment in Kakatar Road, Otuoke Community, and was tortured by the suspects, which led to his death,” he said.

The command’s PRO said that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department and that the suspects would be prosecuted upon completion of the investigation.

Mohammed quoted the Commissioner of Police in the state as warning members of the public against self-help or jungle justice in Bayelsa.

“Suspicious activities are advised to be reported at the nearest Police Station or call 07034578208/ 09167322691,” he added.
