In a significant move to enhance the structure of netball in Nigeria, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has appointed Dr Oluwatoyin Aluko as the new President of the Nigeria Netball Federation (NNF). The announcement, made by NSC’s Director General Bukola Olopade, emphasises the need for a sustainable framework to foster the growth of netball across the nation.

In a press release signed by Dr Kehinde Ajayi, the director of information and public relations, Olopade stated that with netball being one of the fastest-growing sports globally, Nigeria is well-positioned to tap into its potential, especially with many skilled athletes in the diaspora competing at high levels. “As part of the President’s mandate to cultivate a sustainable sports economy, we aim to create an organised system where Nigerians, both at home and abroad, can proudly represent their country in their chosen sports,” he remarked.

He further highlighted that over thirty Nigerian players are currently participating in top netball leagues in Europe and South Africa, indicating the potential to form a formidable national team. Dr Aluko, a former netball player with extensive experience, also serves as the President of the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN). With over 45 years in sports as an athlete, coach, and administrator, she is well-equipped to lead the NNF. “This is a pivotal step for us, and we will soon announce the entire board,” Olopade added.
