Ogun govt engages partners, experts on measles-rubella vaccination campaign

Published:

The Ogun State Government, as part of efforts to improve child health outcomes and sustain disease prevention across the state, has engaged development partners and health experts to strengthen preparations for the forthcoming Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign.

The Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, disclosed this during an engagement meeting that brought together stakeholders in the health sector, underscoring the state’s commitment to protecting children against vaccine-preventable diseases.

She described immunisation as one of the most cost-effective public health interventions and assured stakeholders of the government’s readiness to provide the necessary operational and policy support for the campaign.

Coker commended health workers across the state for their dedication and resilience, adding that their roles would be pivotal to the success of the measles-rubella vaccination drive.

She urged parents, caregivers, and community leaders to support the initiative by ensuring that eligible children are vaccinated, noting that collective responsibility is key to disease elimination in the state.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Healthcare Development Board, Elijah Ogunsola, stated that the engagement was both relevant and strategic, pointing out that measles-rubella remains a serious public health risk if not adequately addressed.

He explained that the campaign’s main objectives are to increase coverage, improve routine immunisation, and ensure that no eligible child is left behind, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.

Ogunsola emphasised the value of working with partners and experts, noting that their technical assistance, logistics, and advocacy are essential to the success of the vaccination exercise. He added that the state government is committed to using data-driven strategies, community involvement, and efficient monitoring to achieve the best possible outcomes throughout the campaign.

Speaking on behalf of the partners, the World Health Organization (WHO) Measles-Rubella Consultant, Bamidele Olayinka, expressed appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for the administration’s achievements in the health sector. She noted that sustained investments in Primary Healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, and disease prevention had positioned Ogun State as a model for other states.

In addition to boosting immunity against other vaccine-preventable diseases, Dr. Olayinka promised continued collaboration with the state government to maintain an Ogun State free of polio.
