Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has urged opposition parties to resist the Senate’s rejection of mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
Amaechi joined protesters at the National Assembly on Tuesday, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of blocking the measure out of fear of losing future elections.
He called on opposition parties to unite and take a firm stand against what he described as an attempt by one party to dominate the electoral process.
“I believe that the opposition parties should come out, PDP, ADC, everybody should be out to protest against the attempt of one party,” he said.
He dismissed concerns that protests could be hijacked, questioning APC’s own actions. “If we come out, and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? I thought they said they have 31 governors. Tinubu is not Jonathan. The only way a good politician will know he has done well is by the people,” Amaechi remarked.
The former governor expressed disbelief that APC would feel threatened despite boasting of numerous governors and defections from opposition parties.
He also voiced doubt that Senate President Godswill Akpabio or President Bola Tinubu would address Nigerians’ concerns, stressing that opposition parties and civil society groups must continue pressing until the decision is reversed.
