The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their planned protest in Abuja after a tense overnight negotiation with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and members of the Senate Committee on the FCT.
The meeting, which began late Monday and stretched into the early hours of Tuesday, ended with a truce that saw labour leaders instructing workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to return to their offices immediately. The unions said the decision was reached to restore normalcy across government institutions in the capital.
At the heart of the dispute were grievances raised by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC), which had accused the FCTA of unfair labour practices.
The strike had paralyzed activities in Abuja for more than a week, prompting urgent intervention from the Senate Committee led by Senator Mohammed Bomoi.
During the marathon talks, assurances were reportedly given that no worker would face victimization for participating in the strike. Labour leaders also secured commitments that all pending cases at the National Industrial Court would be withdrawn, while outstanding welfare concerns would be addressed.
The suspension of the protest marks a significant relief for residents and government offices in Abuja, where administrative activities had been disrupted. However, union leaders cautioned that the truce depends on the government’s sincerity in implementing the agreements reached.
