Nigerians spend ₦1.54tn on beer in nine months

Published:

Nigerians spent an estimated ₦1.54 trillion on beer and other beverages in the first nine months of 2025, according to unaudited financial statements from the country’s three major listed brewers.

Figures from Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Champion Breweries Plc show strong revenues despite rising production costs and economic pressures.

Nigerian Breweries Plc, the largest player, accounted for the bulk of sales, posting ₦1.05 trillion in net revenue between January and September 2025, a sharp rise from ₦710.87 billion in the same period of 2024. The company reported a profit after tax of ₦85.51 billion, reversing a ₦149.50 billion loss recorded the previous year.

International Breweries Plc followed with ₦472.57 billion in revenue, up from ₦343.45 billion in 2024. It also swung back to profitability, recording ₦57.83 billion profit after tax compared with a ₦112.81 billion loss the year before.

Champion Breweries Plc, though smaller, showed remarkable growth. Revenue climbed to ₦21.44 billion from ₦14.02 billion in 2024, while profit after tax surged to ₦2.05 billion, a massive leap from just ₦21.5 million the previous year.

The numbers highlight the resilience of Nigeria’s beer market, which continues to thrive on brand loyalty and wide distribution networks. Yet, consumer behaviour is shifting. Some Nigerians are cutting back on beer consumption, forcing breweries to rethink strategies.

Despite inflationary pressures and rising costs, the sector’s rebound from losses in 2024 to profits in 2025 reveals its importance in Nigeria’s consumer market and its ability to weather economic storms.
