The Lagos State Government has clarified that the ongoing demolition and removal of structures in the Makoko fishing community is driven by safety concerns, and not for alleged land grabbing by the authorities.
This was disclosed on Monday by Dr Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser on Urban Development and E-GIS to the Governor, during a briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa-Ikeja.
Babatunde explained that the structures being removed are located directly beneath high-tension electricity poles, posing significant risks to residents’ lives.
He emphasised that this exercise is part of a broader safety initiative and is not limited to Makoko alone.
He added that the regeneration of the remaining parts of the community will be carried out in phases, ensuring that residents’ welfare and convenience are prioritised during development.
He noted that the removal of unsafe structures under high-tension poles is ongoing across the state, citing associated health hazards and other risks.
“Urban regeneration in Lagos is not limited to Makoko and Oworonshoki. Other areas previously and currently undergoing similar interventions include Pelewura, Kantangowa, and Oko-Baba, among others,” Babatunde stated.
He further noted, “The removal of such structures did not begin under this administration. It has been an ongoing process, and we will continue to enforce regulations to ensure a safe and orderly environment so that Lagos can be the city we all aspire to live in,” he added.
DAILY POST reports that some of the affected residents have consistently argued that their demolished structures are not located under high-tension wires. They alleged that the state government is acting against the interests of the poor residents of the affected communities.
