The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action against unsanitary practices in the food supply chain, shutting down another illegal abattoir operating on Succo Road, Oko Oba, Agege. During the operation, four suspects were arrested for allegedly slaughtering animals for public consumption under unhygienic conditions.
The enforcement exercise was led by Major Olaniyi Cole (retd), Corps Marshal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC). The raid was initiated following a tip-off from a whistleblower and comes just days after a similar operation where a residential building on Alfred Williams Street, Iju Station, was sealed for related offenses.
Zero Tolerance for Environmental Violations
Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, underscored the state’s heightened commitment to combating environmental violations and safeguarding public health. “This swift response demonstrates our zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of environmental infractions, whether in designated facilities or residential areas,” Wahab stated.
He revealed that this latest illegal abattoir was shockingly discovered within a private residence, situated directly opposite the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Barracks and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) yard. Authorities acted swiftly to confiscate contaminated meat from cows and goats, preventing it from entering the public food supply and posing a severe risk to consumers.
Upholding Public Health and Deterring Offenders
Commissioner Wahab further emphasized the government’s stance: “This action is in defiance of the recent closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir over unwholesome practices and poses serious health dangers to law-abiding residents.” He reiterated that “Such disregard for public health and sanitation will not be tolerated in Lagos State. Government’s primary responsibility is the protection of lives and properties, and we remain committed to that duty.”
All suspects apprehended during the operation will face prosecution in accordance with the State Environmental Laws. This firm approach aims to serve as a strong deterrent to others contemplating similar illegal and dangerous activities, reinforcing the government’s resolve to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
