Labour Party Protest Controversy

Published:

Civil society organizations, led by the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP), staged a protest at the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday. The demonstrators gathered around 11:00 a.m., carrying banners and placards with messages such as “INEC, who is using you against LP,” “Mahmood stop destroying democracy in Nigeria,” and “Tell INEC to obey court orders.” Their primary demand was the inclusion of the party’s candidates in the forthcoming nationwide bye-elections.

However, a conflicting statement emerged from another faction of the Labour Party, led by Interim National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman. Signed by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to Senator Usman, the statement explicitly disowned the protest, labeling the organizers as “impostors” and “political impersonators.” This indicates an internal dispute within the Labour Party regarding its leadership and official actions.
