Labour Party Disowns Fake Social Media Account

Published:

The Labour Party (LP) has disowned a fake X (formerly Twitter) account operating under the name “Nigeria Labour Party (LP)” with the handle @NewsLp26689, describing it as unauthorised and misleading.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party said the account was created in January 2026, shortly after the Federal High Court judgement affirming Senator Nenadi Usman as the Interim National Chairman of the party.

According to the statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the LP Interim National Chairman, the fake account has been posing as the official communication channel of the Labour Party.

“The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to a fake X (formerly Twitter) account operating under the name ‘Nigeria Labour Party (LP)’ with the handle @NewsLp26689, which is falsely purporting to disseminate information to the general public on behalf of the party,” Asogwa stated.

He clarified that the Labour Party’s only known social media accounts, ‘Labour Party-Nig’ on Facebook with about 12,000 followers, and @LabourPartyNG on X with roughly 839,000 followers are currently inactive.

“Following the recent Federal High Court judgment affirming Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership of the party, the Labour Party has formally written to the erstwhile leadership to hand over these official social media accounts,” he said. “The party remains hopeful that this process will be concluded peacefully and without rancour.”

Asogwa further noted that until the handover is completed, the Labour Party does not operate any social media account for public communication.

“Consequently, the Labour Party currently does not operate any Facebook or X account for the dissemination of information to the public,” the statement read. “In the interim, all official communications are conveyed strictly through duly approved press statements issued from the Office of the Interim National Chairman.”

He urged members of the public and the media to disregard any information shared by the unauthorised @NewsLp26689account, describing it as a parody account not recognised by the party’s leadership.

The statement concluded with appreciation to the media for what it described as their “vigilance, professionalism, and unbiased reportage on matters concerning the party.”
