Former Head of State, General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, has declared that the path to national renewal for Nigeria begins with moral renewal anchored on the transformative power of the Holy Scriptures.
He made the assertion while delivering goodwill message at the grand finale of the 60th Anniversary Celebration of The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN).
The high-profile Founder’s Day Annual Lecture and Awards Ceremony, held in MUSON centre, Onikan Lagos, drew a gathering of the nation’s political, religious, and business elite. In attendance were former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, represented by Rtd Lt Col. Paul Edo Obi and other dignitaries.
Speaking as the Patron of the Society, Gen. Gowon framed the BSN’s work as a critical component of nation-building. “The Bible Society of Nigeria has consistently reminded us that national renewal begins with moral renewal, and moral renewal begins with hearts transformed by the Word of God,” he stated.
He praised the Society’s six-decade journey from its founding in 1966 to becoming a “national and global force for spiritual transformation,” highlighting its efforts in Bible translation into indigenous languages, scripture distribution in print and digital formats, and outreach to prisons, security agencies, and displaced communities.
“In a world increasingly challenged by moral decline, conflict, misinformation, and loss of values, the relevance of the Scriptures has never been greater,” the former leader noted, adding that the Bible serves as “light in darkness, hope in despair, and truth in confusion” for the nation.
Looking forward, Gen. Gowon issued a national call for broader support for the Society’s next phase, which includes a sustainable infrastructure plan featuring a Bible House project. “I therefore call on individuals, churches, corporate bodies, and friends of BSN, both within and outside Nigeria, to continue to stand with this noble mission,” he urged. “When we support the Bible Society, we are investing not just in an institution, but in the spiritual and moral foundation of our nation.”
The event also featured a lecture by Pastor Poju Oyemade, Senior Pastor of The Covenant Nation, and saw several individuals and institutions honoured with awards for exemplary service to God and humanity.
