Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to establish a federal kidney disease centre to save the people of the state from the scourge of chronic kidney disease.
The governor made the appeal on Thursday while delivering his address at the official commissioning of the Biomedical Science Research Centre (BioRTC) permanent site at Yobe State University, Damaturu.
Buni reaffirmed his commitment to the state-funded kidney disease initiative, noting that it is what responsible governance demands — policy guided by evidence and investment guided by the health needs of the people.
“We have made dialysis support available to our citizens, and this year, we will establish an additional dialysis centre in Gashua, to save patients of kidney disease from travelling long distances to access care.
“I humbly plead with the federal government to establish a Federal Kidney Disease Center in the state to save our people from this deadly scourge,” he said.
According to the governor, the state is equally pleased to see the innovative open-science work at BioRTC, including the building and testing of low-cost microscopes that can support field diagnosis and strengthen community-level health services, especially in rural settings.
“In this regard, I urge the Federal Ministry of Health to partner the BioRTC for open, low-cost diagnostics on malaria microscopy and other related community-level diagnostic programmes,” he appealed.
This, he said, will allow evidence-based innovations developed in Yobe State to inform national practice and strengthen health systems, particularly in underserved regions.
Governor Buni commended the centre’s contribution to capacity building through summer schools, workshops and international training programmes, supported by the state government.
“Already, over 1,000 people from Yobe, Nigeria, and Africa have been trained,” he said.
