Give human face to tax laws – Catholic bishops tell Nigerian Govt

Published:

The Catholic Bishops of the Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province have called on the Federal Government to give human face to the new tax laws to ensure fairness, transparency and compassion.

This is even as the bishops cautioned that policies lacking a human face could worsen the hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.

The clerics made this call in a communiqué issued at the end of the their first provincial meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State.

DAILY POST reports that the tax reforms were initiated by the administration of President Bola Tinubu and signed into law on June 26, 2025.

The reforms took effect on January 1, 2026, and have since generated mixed reactions nationwide.

The Catholic leaders explained that they understand the government’s intention to reform Nigeria’s tax system but noted that the implementation had triggered widespread controversy and anxiety, particularly among the poor and vulnerable.

“The reforms must be guided by fairness, transparency and accountability. Government should give the reforms a human face and allow the most vulnerable among us the latitude to adjust to the new tax regimes before applying the full force of the law,” the bishops said.
