FCT Council elections: Teargas disrupts vote counting at Kuchaku polling unit in Kuje

Published:

Tear gas was reportedly discharged at the Kuchaku polling unit in Kuje Area Council on Saturday just as ballot counting began, triggering panic among voters and disrupting the collation of results.

According to a video circulating online, a voter alleged that armed men linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC) stormed the polling venue and seized election materials, including the councillorship result sheet.

The voter claimed the individuals arrived while officials were computing results and discharged tear gas before carting away the document.

“APC came with armed gunmen to pick our result sheet that we were computing just now and went with it. They tear-gassed everybody,” the voter said in the video.

It was also noted that officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police Force were present at the scene when the incident occurred.

Several voters reportedly fled the area after the tear gas was discharged, causing confusion and temporarily halting the counting process.
