12-Year-Old Drowns in Edo Flood: Schools Lose Licenses Over Tragic Incident

Published:

A devastating incident in Uselu community, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, has led to the tragic death of 12-year-old Master Nathan Paul Spencer. He was swept away by floodwaters while on his way to his Middle Basic Assessment Examination.

Paddy Iyamu, the Commissioner for Education, confirmed the Monday, July 7th incident and announced that the state government has revoked the licenses of two schools connected to the boy’s death. During a condolence visit to Nathan’s parents, Iyamu also revealed that the head of one of the implicated schools had been arrested.

Two schools were shut down directly due to the death, while two others were closed for allegedly charging illegal fees from over 200 pupils. “We’ve also withdrawn the licenses of the two schools in connection with the death of the minor. Further action would be taken to effect consequence on the management,” Iyamu stated.

Investigation into the drowning revealed that Nathan’s school registered him for the exam at a different location without informing his parents. “It was revealed that the Head of the school had taken the registration fee from Nathan’s parents in Ovia Local Government but negligently took the child to another school in Egor Local Government for the examination. Tragically, Nathan fell into a gutter and drowned during heavy rain,” the Commissioner explained.

Mr. Paul Spencer, Nathan’s father, expressed his unawareness that his son’s school had registered him for an examination so far from home. The Commissioner assured the family that those responsible would be held accountable.
