A senior lecturer at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Dr Uchechi Onyedikachi, has raised the alarm over the impact of micro- plastics and heavy metals on soil in the country
Onyedikachi spoke during a seminar organised by the university for cassava farmers in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, drawing attention to the dangers of the items on soil quality, crop yield and public health.
The researcher, therefore, called for stronger regulations, increased community awareness and sustainable waste management practices to safeguard food safety and livelihoods.
She urged farmers to prioritize and adopt global best agricultural and environmental practices to ensure food safety, protect public health and promote sustainable farming systems.
Â
‎In her presentation, a resource person, Mrs Chinyere Anyanwu, explained that agricultural productivity had declined in the country due to increasing development pressures on farmlands.
Â
‎While noting that the high cost of living has forced farmers to seek ways to maximise income, she pointed at the rising costs of seedlings and farm inputs as disturbing.
Â
‎Other resource persons, including Prof Chukwu Godwin Ogbonnaya and Dr Doris Akachukwu underscored the need for diligent practices in cassava farming.
Â
‎In their contributions, some of the participants Mrs Munachi and Mr Ekeleme shared their experiences in cassava farming and commended the university for organising the seminar.
