Breaking News: Morocco Crowned AFCON 2025 Champions After Senegal’s Win Overturned

Published:

In a surprising turn of events, Morocco has been declared the official winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the result of the final match against Senegal.

Originally held on January 18, Senegal triumphed over Morocco with a 1-0 scoreline, a match marred by controversy. The Senegalese players initially refused to continue playing after a contentious stoppage-time penalty was awarded to Morocco while the game remained goalless.

After a lengthy delay of approximately 17 minutes, the players resumed, but Brahim Diaz’s penalty was saved, leading to Pape Gueye scoring an extra-time winner for Senegal.

However, in a significant but controversial ruling on Tuesday, CAF has declared that Senegal forfeited the final match.

According to their statement, the match result has now been officially altered to a 3-0 victory in favor of Morocco.

This decision marks a historic moment for Moroccan football, as they reclaim the title amidst the fallout from a highly contentious final.
