Borno bombings: African Union rallies support to help Nigeria fight terrorism

Published:

The African Union Commission has condemned the suicide bombings in Maiduguri, describing the attacks as a serious threat to peace and a violation of human rights.

In a statement by the spokesperson, Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf expressed solidarity with Nigeria, offering condolences to victims’ families and wishing the injured a quick recovery.

He stressed AU’s “unequivocal rejection” of terrorism, noting that such violence “undermines peace, security, and stability within communities.”

The Commission also commended Nigerian authorities for ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, but warned that the attack highlights the “persistent threat” posed by extremist groups.

The AU further called for stronger international support, urging increased humanitarian aid, intelligence-sharing, and long-term investment to tackle the root causes of violent extremism.

Reaffirming its position, the AU emphasized that only “collective action and sustained commitment” can effectively defeat terrorism and ensure lasting peace in the region.
