Atiku condemns ‘heinous’ Niger attacks, demands immediate rescue of abducted residents

Published:

Former Vice President and presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, has joined the chorus of national grief and outrage following the wave of terrorist violence sweeping through Niger State.

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, the Waziri of Adamawa expressed his profound sadness over the bloodletting in Agwarra and Borgu Local Government Areas—attacks that resulted in a tragic loss of lives and the mass abduction of innocent residents, including vulnerable schoolchildren.

Atiku did not mince words in his assessment of the security breach, characterizing the onslaught as a direct affront to the sanctity of human life. He described the targeted attacks against defenseless villagers as both “heinous” and “brazen,” noting that such escalating brutality is “unacceptable and deeply troubling.”

While extending his condolences to the bereaved families and the government of Niger State, Atiku emphasized that the current climate of fear must be met with decisive state power.

With scores of victims—including students from recent school raids—still held in forest enclaves, the former Vice President turned his attention to the immediate humanitarian crisis.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, those abducted, particularly the children, and I urge the relevant authorities to act swiftly to secure their safe and unconditional release,” Atiku stated.

Atiku reminded the current administration that the primary legitimacy of any government rests on its ability to protect its citizens. He called for a total overhaul of security measures to restore public confidence, which has been severely shaken by the surge of attacks across the North-Central region.

Beyond immediate rescue efforts, he insisted on strengthened security deployments in vulnerable rural corridors, restoration of public confidence through visible state presence and rigorous prosecution of those captured to serve as a deterrent.

The surge in violence in Niger State continues to draw international and domestic scrutiny, with Atiku’s intervention highlighting the growing political pressure for a more coordinated and effective security response to protect Nigeria’s interior.
