Algeria kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in emphatic fashion, securing a decisive 3-0 victory over Sudan in their Group E opener on Wednesday.
The match, held at a vibrant venue, saw the Algerian side showcase their attacking prowess from the outset.
The game got off to a flying start with Riyad Mahrez making an immediate impact. Just two minutes in, Mahrez delivered a pinpoint assist to Hicham Boudaoui, who slotted home to give Algeria an early lead. The swift goal set the tone for the remainder of the first half, with Algeria dominating possession and creating several opportunities, though they were unable to convert further chances before the break.
Sudan struggled to find their rhythm, with their best efforts thwarted by a resolute Algerian defence. The first half ended 1-0, leaving Sudan with much to ponder as they regrouped for the second half.
Algeria continued to apply pressure after the interval, and their persistence paid off in the 61st minute. Mahrez, who had been a constant threat throughout the match, found the net himself after a well-executed move, doubling Algeria’s advantage. The goal sent the fans into raptures and left Sudan with a mountain to climb.
As the match approached its conclusion, Algeria sealed their victory with a third goal in the 85th minute. Substitute Islam Maza, who had come on late in the game, scored with a clinical finish after being set up by Baghdad Bounedjah, further emphasising Algeria’s dominance.
The match concluded with a scoreline of 3-0, marking a strong start for Algeria in the AFCON tournament. The team will look to build on this momentum as they aim for success in the coming matches, while Sudan will need to regroup and reassess ahead of their next fixture.
Algeria’s impressive display not only highlighted their title credentials but also sent a clear message to their Group E rivals.
