AFCON 2025: Algeria Pip DR Congo To Set Up Quarter-Final Tie Against Nigeria

Published:

Algeria scored deep into extra-time to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in their AFCON ’25 round of 16 tie on at the Moulay Hassan stadium on Tuesday.

Substitute Adil Boulbina broke DR Congo’s heart with an unstoppable strike in the 119th minute to lead Algeria into the quarter-final round.

It was a frustrating and cagey affair between both sides as Algeria could not break down the DR Congo defence in normal time due to a combination of resolute defending and poor decision making in the final third by the 2019 AFCON champions.

Aissa Mandi flicked a header wide from a free-kick delivery, Ibrahim Maza flashed a shot just wide, while Mohamed Amoura could only shoot into the arms of goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi who also saved a double shot late on as DR Congo held on after 90 minutes to force extra-time.

The Fenecs continued to push for the winner and it arrived a minute to the end when 22 years old Boulbina slammed a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area to seal a deserved victory for the North Africans.

Algeria return to the final eight stage at AFCON after two group stage finishes, and will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Marrakesh on January 10.
