Veteran Nollywood actor Patrick Doyle has taken a firm stance against entertainers who openly back politicians for personal gain, describing such behavior as nothing short of greedy.
Speaking in a candid interview with Oyinmomo TV, the 64-year-old actor stressed that financially secure entertainers should prioritize speaking for the people instead of chasing private rewards through political alliances.
Doyle lamented that some actors and filmmakers even find themselves embroiled in disputes over money received after promoting politicians. “Many of the entertainers are greedy,” he remarked. “If you consider the entertainment industry, actors are already getting fed well from their income. And if you are comfortable and you want to contribute, you should not be looking for personal benefits again. They should speak on behalf of the masses.”
He further explained that many in the industry, already well-off from their work, do not need to pursue additional financial perks from political campaigns. The veteran actor also warned that acting is an art form that should remain independent of government influence.
Doyle observed that an increasing number of entertainers have been openly aligning with politicians, creating divisions within Nollywood. Reflecting on the last presidential election, he noted that some actors even faced online and physical attacks because of their political choices.
He recounted: “Most of those entertainers who campaigned in my presence, you would actually think they are really campaigning for that person, and when they are done, you will still see the entertainers fighting themselves over the financial benefit. The problem is just greed.”
For Doyle, the message is clear: while entertainers can and should engage in societal discourse, their motivations must not be driven by personal enrichment. The integrity of the art and the voice of the people should always come first.
