The African Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR) has commended the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, over the registration of two new political parties, describing the move as evidence of the Commission’s readiness to deliver inclusive and credible elections.
In a statement made by the ACJHR, signed by Comrade Abubakar Musa, the organisation praised Prof. Amupitan for what it described as a bold step toward expanding Nigeria’s democratic space and strengthening political participation.
LEADERSHIP reports that INEC had recently expanded Nigeria’s political landscape with the registration of two new political parties, the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Reacting to the development, ACJHR said the decision was “a clear demonstration of the Commission’s commitment to inclusive democracy and credible electoral processes.”
The Centre noted that the registration of new political parties “strengthens Nigeria’s democratic space by expanding political participation, deepening pluralism, and giving citizens broader choices ahead of future elections.”
According to ACJHR, the development reflected INEC’s preparedness to conduct elections that are “transparent, fair, and reflective of the will of the people,” especially as the country looks ahead to future electoral contests.
The organisation further stated that Prof. Amupitan’s leadership “continues to inspire public confidence in the electoral process,” particularly at a time when democratic institutions must be fortified to withstand “undue pressure and misinformation.”
“By allowing qualified political associations to evolve into fully registered parties, INEC has reaffirmed its constitutional responsibility to promote inclusiveness and equal opportunity in Nigeria’s political system,” the statement read.
ACJHR also called on political stakeholders, civil society organisations, and Nigerians at large to support INEC’s ongoing reforms, while urging them to resist any attempts aimed at undermining the Commission or discrediting its leadership.
The Centre reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote credible elections and good governance in Nigeria, stressing that a strong and independent electoral body remains central to the country’s democratic stability.
