President Tinubu Commissions First-Ever Modern Bus Terminal

Published:

A development that promises to transform daily commutes and enhance security in our nation’s capital. Imagine a city the size of Abuja without a proper, modern bus terminal. Hard to believe, right? Well, that’s been the reality, but things are finally changing!

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, President Bola Tinubu officially commissioned the first-ever modern bus terminal in Abuja, located in Mabushi. This isn’t just about buses; it’s about bringing order, accountability, and safety to public transportation – a major step forward for our city.

A New Dawn for Abuja Commuters

Represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, President Tinubu shared his excitement about this “truly transformative” project. And guess what? Another terminal in Kugbo is already ready for commissioning, with a third in the Central Business District expected before the year ends! This is a clear signal that the administration is serious about modernizing our public transport system.

“This edifice… represents far more than just a transportation hub,” the President stated. “It is a tangible symbol of our unwavering commitment to the safety, security, and prosperity of every resident of Abuja.”

For too long, Abuja has grappled with the chaos of an informal transport system. Think about it: random pick-up points, traffic congestion, and the terrifying “one chance” crimes that have unfortunately plagued many commuters. President Tinubu’s message was clear: “No longer will our citizens be left to the mercy of impromptu pick-up points; they will now have a secure, well-regulated environment to board their vehicles, knowing that both the drivers and the vehicles are known and registered.” This is a huge win for urban security!

More Than Just Buses: Jobs and Economic Empowerment

Beyond making commutes safer and more organized, this project is also a significant engine for economic empowerment. The President highlighted that the construction of these terminals has already created over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs for Abuja’s industrious people. From skilled artisans to general laborers, this initiative is putting food on tables and rekindling hope for countless families – a direct fulfillment of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda through job creation.

Wike’s Vision: Expanding the Network

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, in his welcome address, shed more light on the ambitious plans. “We are constructing three bus terminals in the FCT,” he confirmed, mentioning Mabushi, Kugbo (which will be commissioned next week), and the Central Business Area.

But they’re not stopping there! Wike also announced plans to construct new terminals in Wuye, Bwari, and Kuje this year. This expanding network clearly shows a comprehensive strategy to overhaul public transportation across the entire FCT.

The core essence of these projects, as Wike reiterated, is to enhance security. “We are trying to eliminate the ‘one chance’ syndrome, where commuters are vulnerable to attacks by unknown drivers. With this terminal, commuters will know the drivers and the vehicles they are boarding, making their journeys safer.”

He also addressed the perennial issue of indiscriminate parking, explaining that these terminals will provide “a safe and organised space for vehicles to park, reducing congestion on the roads.” It’s truly baffling that a city like Abuja has gone without such essential infrastructure for so long, but as Wike put it, “we thank God that today, our prayers have been answered.”

World-Class Amenities and Private Management

In a smart move to ensure efficiency, Minister Wike confirmed that the FCT Transport Secretariat will not operate the terminal directly. Instead, it will be concessioned to private operators to ensure it’s run effectively.

And these aren’t just bare-bones bus stops! The terminals are designed to operate 24 hours a day, providing commuters with a safe and comfortable space. They’ll feature amenities such as food courts, restrooms, and even entertainment facilities like cinema halls where commuters can unwind. This thoughtful integration of commercial activities and relaxation areas means these terminals will truly be vibrant hubs, not just places to catch a bus.

So, next time you’re in Abuja, look out for these modern terminals. They’re more than just buildings; they’re a testament to a concerted effort to bring order, safety, and economic opportunities to the heart of our nation. What do you think about these new developments for Abuja?
