Jos —Youths in Barkin Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, yesterday, blocked the highway leading to Jos and other local government areas of the state to protest the killing of community members by gunmen, who attacked the Dorowa Bubuje area Sunday night.
Fourteen persons were killed in three separate attacks in rural communities in the state.
Recall that gunmen on Sunday night stormed Dorowa Babuje in Barkin Ladi council of the state killing nine persons.
Vanguard gathered that the assailants invaded the community about 8:30p.m., unleashing sporadic gunfire on residents.
A community leader associated with the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the sad incident to our correspondent in Jos.
He said nine persons were killed following an attack by armed terrorists at Ratatis, Dorowa Babuje in Barkin council.
He said the attack, which occurred on Sunday night, left three others seriously injured. The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
He also confirmed that one person was shot dead in Jol village in Riyom Local Government Area of the state.
In another development, four traders were, yesterday, killed when terrosists ambushed a group of six shoe sellers travelling from Gangare in Jos to Pankshin council for business.
The victims were reportedly attacked before reaching Mangu Hale in Mangu Local Government Area of the state.
The killing of the traders raised tensions within Jos and its environs, leading to deployment of security personnel to restore order.
An official of the Traders and Marketers Association, Jos Main Market branch, Suleiman Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that the victims were intercepted at gunpoint.
“Four out of the six traders from Gangare, Jos, going to Pankshin were attacked and killed. Two of them escaped, and we have spoken with them,” Abubakar said.
Efforts to reach security operatives for comments was unsuccessful at press time.
Vanguard learnt that the protesting youths, who were joined by women and other sympathisers, vowed not to vacate the road untill the perpetrators of the attack were apprehended and punished according to the law.
One of the protesting youths, Samson Godiya, lamenting the situation, said: “We have suffered as a community for too long in the hands of these attackers. For how long shall we continue to be killed without anything being done to stop them.
“We cannot continue like this. We are tired of promises by the government and security agents to protect us. If they cannot live up to their promises, they should leave us alone.
“A situation where the security people will be there and at the same time, cannot stop the killers from having their way is what we can not understand.”
Vanguard gathered that following the youths’ action, motorists coming from Shendam and Langtang axis were stopped from moving to Jos, while those from Jos were also stranded.
It took the intervention of security operatives and elders of the community to put the situation under control.
At press time, normally has returned to the community.
