Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), former Chief Security Officer to late General Sani Abacha, has officially announced his intention to run for president in the 2027 general elections under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
His declaration was made on Tuesday in Minna, Niger State, during a meeting with the SDP’s state executive committee and supporters. Al-Mustapha, who was the presidential candidate for the Action Alliance in the 2023 elections, recently joined the SDP in March.
Addressing the gathering, he pledged to provide purposeful leadership characterized by integrity and national rebirth. “I am pained and deeply concerned about the current state of the nation. However, with the right direction and commitment, Nigeria can rise again. Though the road ahead may be rough, together we can rebuild the Nigeria we all deserve,” Al-Mustapha stated.
He indicated that the Minna meeting is part of a wider nationwide consultation to build support and momentum for the 2027 polls. A statement from Jubril Umar Sanda, Director of News Media and ICT for the campaign, affirmed Al-Mustapha’s readiness to serve with “integrity, courage, and a clear plan for progress.”
Earlier the same day, Al-Mustapha had stopped in Minna on his way to Mokwa to offer sympathy to residents affected by a recent flood disaster. He emphasized the critical need for competent leadership, unity, and sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, stating that the nation’s future depends on leaders who can act decisively.
Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima, the SDP State Chairman, welcomed Al-Mustapha’s declaration, calling it a turning point for the party and expressing confidence that the SDP will be a significant force in 2027 with credible candidates and a clear vision.
