BENIN CITY — Amid reports of violence in some states, the All Progressives Congress in Edo State on Wednesday conducted rancour-free ward congresses across the 192 wards, with leaders emerging through consensus.
Addressing journalists at the party secretariat in Benin City, the state chairman, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, flanked by a delegation from the party’s national secretariat, urged the newly elected leaders to provide good leadership and strengthen grassroots mobilisation.
He also charged them to mobilise residents for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) by the Independent National Electoral Commission to help realise the 3.5 million votes promised to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Tenebe described the seamless conduct of the congresses as a milestone in the political evolution of Edo State, noting that the exercise reaffirmed the party’s commitment to unity, transparency, and inclusivity.
“The guidelines provided by the National Working Committee for the conduct of congresses were implemented strictly in Edo State. The result is a process concluded without rancour, disharmony, or division among members,” he said.
He emphasised that the ward remains the bedrock of the party’s structure and the closest link to the grassroots electorate, who ultimately determine outcomes at state and national levels.
“You are entrusted with the duty of deepening party structures at the grassroots, mobilising our people, and ensuring that party policies resonate meaningfully within your communities,” he told the new ward executives.
Tenebe stressed the importance of the ongoing voter registration exercise as a critical step toward the 2027 general elections, urging leaders to encourage eligible citizens to register and safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He further advised the ward executives to work closely with their local government counterparts to sustain the harmony currently enjoyed within the party.
