Video: Shettima inspects fire-ravaged Kano market

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday visited the fire-ravaged Singer Market in Kano State, where a weekend inferno destroyed goods and property estimated at over N5 billion, affecting more than 1,000 shops and leaving seven traders feared missing.

The fire broke out on Saturday evening, February 14, 2026, in the Gidan Glass section of the market along Ado Bayero Road and raged into Sunday morning, causing widespread devastation.

Shettima’s visit followed a directive by President Bola Tinubu, who instructed the Vice President to lead a Federal Government delegation to Kano to assess the damage and convey the government’s sympathy to affected traders.

In videos shared on X on Monday by the vice president’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima was seen walking through the destroyed sections of the market alongside members of the federal delegation, inspecting the extent of the damage and interacting with victims.

Large crowds of traders and residents gathered at the scene, chanting and waving as the vice president moved through the market.

A State House press release issued on Sunday stated that the delegation would also pledge financial assistance on behalf of the Federal Government to support victims and assist Kano State in facilitating the quick reopening of the market.

“The delegation will also pledge, on behalf of the government, financial assistance to aid the victims and support Kano State in facilitating the quick reopening of the market,” the statement read.
