You’ll live better life in Abuja than in UK if you earn £3k monthly — Essien

Tech entrepreneur, Mark Essien has argued that Nigerians earning around £3,000 monthly would enjoy a better quality of life in Abuja than in the United Kingdom.

Essien made the claim in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he compared living standards between Nigeria’s capital and the UK, noting that income levels could stretch further in Abuja despite infrastructural challenges.

“If you earn about 3000 pounds a month, you can live a better life in Abuja than in the UK (as a Nigerian). Yes, there will be inconveniences, but overall it’s probably a better, more comfortable life,” he wrote.

His comment sparked debate among social media users, with some agreeing that lower living costs, housing, and domestic help in Nigeria could offer greater comfort for middle-income earners, while others pointed to challenges such as power supply, security, and healthcare as major drawbacks.

The discussion reflects a broader conversation among Nigerians in the diaspora about cost of living pressures in the UK and the potential benefits of relocating back home.
