Shift 2027 election for Ramadan, ADP tells INEC

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA – THE Action Democratic Party (ADP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to shift the 2027 general election timetable to avoid clashing with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement signed on Friday by the party’s National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, the party welcomed INEC’s announcement that it had begun steps to realign the previously released election timetable, saying that Nigeria’s democracy is strongest when inclusivity, fairness, and peace remain the guiding principles of nation’s collective actions.

The statement is titled, “On the Need for INEC’s Review of the Election Timetable in Deference to Ramadan”

The statement read, “The Action Democratic Party (ADP) notes with appreciation the announcement by the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it has commenced steps toward the legal and constitutional realignment of the previously announced 2027 General Election timetable.

“This development reflects institutional responsiveness to public concerns and sensitivity to the broader national interest. ADP commends INEC for demonstrating a
willingness to listen and to review its processes within the framework of the law.

“While electoral timelines must strictly comply with constitutional and statutory requirements, elections must also command public confidence and reflect the social
realities of our diverse nation. The scheduling of major national elections during the holy month of Ramadan carries significant implications for voter participation,
logistical coordination, and national inclusivity.

“In a plural and multi-faith society such as Nigeria, sensitivity to religious observances s not a concession but a democratic necessity. An election timetable that
accommodates the spiritual commitments of millions of citizens strengthens participation, legitimacy, and national cohesion.

“The Action Democratic Party therefore encourages INEC to continue its consultations with stakeholders and ensure that the final timetable promotes maximum voter turnout,
inclusivity, and stability.

“We call on all political parties, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and citizens to support a peaceful, lawful, and orderly electoral process as adjustments are
considered.

“Nigeria’s democracy is strongest when inclusivity, fairness, and peace remain the guiding principles of our collective actions.”
