Abia shuts Globacom offices over alleged tax default

Published:

The Abia State Government has sealed the Umuahia and Aba offices of Globacom Limited over allegations that the telecommunications firm failed to remit more than ₦4 billion in taxes owed to the state.

The enforcement action was carried out by the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue Service (ABIRS), acting on the strength of an order issued by the High Court of Abia State.

In a statement issued on Thursday, ABIRS Deputy Director of Information, Mrs. Emelle Akunna Loveth, disclosed that the move followed Court Suit No. HU/225M/2025 between the Abia State Internal Revenue Service and Globacom Limited.

According to her, the court, in an order dated January 14, 2026, directed Globacom to pay ₦4,048,748,880, representing unremitted Right of Way withholding taxes and other statutory obligations for the period spanning 2010 to 2022. The order also mandated the payment of interest at the rate of 10 per cent per annum on the outstanding sum, calculated from when the taxes became due until full settlement.

The court further granted a distraint order against Globacom’s goods, chattels, and premises within Abia State, empowering ABIRS to enforce recovery and, where necessary, dispose of distrained assets after 14 days to offset the liabilities, in accordance with the Abia State Tax (Codification and Consolidation) Law, 2020.

Mrs. Loveth explained that the sealing of the offices was carried out strictly in obedience to the court’s directive, stressing that the state government is committed to due process and lawful enforcement of tax compliance.

She added that the Abia State Government expects all corporate entities operating within its jurisdiction to fulfil their statutory obligations, noting that ABIRS remains open to engagement with Globacom once the company fully complies with the terms of the court order.
