Jos — As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, a coalition of coordinators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) volunteer support groups in Plateau State has called on citizens to remain steadfast and identify with the Party, insisting that its structure remains intact despite recent defections.
The group made the appeal following the exit of Governor Caleb Mutfwang from the PDP, maintaining that his departure, alongside some of his appointees, does not diminish the strength or viability of the Party in the State.
Addressing journalists in Jos, the state capital, the Acting Chairman of the coalition, Stephen Amunkai, said the PDP remains formidable and is already repositioning to reclaim its political footing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He emphasised that the governor’s defection did not affect the Party’s grassroots structure spread across the 17 local government areas.
“We want to assure you that PDP is strong, nothing has happened. The governor only left the Party with some of his appointees. He did not leave the Party with the Party structure,” Amunkai stated.
He added that the volunteer support groups, drawn from all 17 LGAs, are committed to ensuring a successful outing for PDP candidates in future elections.
Amunkai described former governorship aspirant, Mr Alfred Dapal, as “a dependable and seasoned leader whose contributions to the Party remain significant.”
He noted that Dapal stood firmly with the PDP during some of its most challenging moments.
According to the coalition,
“We hereby extend a heartfelt invitation to all aggrieved and former members of the PDP in Plateau State, particularly Mr Alfred Dapal, to return to the Party and participate actively in its revitalisation and restructuring.
“We stand ready to receive our brothers and sisters warmly as we work together towards building a Plateau State that is more united, just, and prosperous for all citizens.”
He disclosed the current direction of the PDP is focused on reflecting the collective will of stakeholders through justice, inclusivity and participatory democracy, and argued that Dapal’s return would signify reconciliation and a renewed commitment to the Party’s founding ideals.
The coalition further called on former members who left after the 2023 elections to reconsider their decision and return, stressing that the Party is undergoing restructuring for stronger and more inclusive leadership.
The coordinators expressed optimism that ongoing reconciliation efforts would strengthen the PDP’s base and position it competitively for the 2027 general elections.
