KADUNA — Former Governors Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna State and Sule Lamido of Jigawa State on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting at Makarfi’s residence, focusing on reconciliation and unity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The two elder statesmen later briefed journalists, describing the engagement as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makarfi, former National Caretaker Chairman and Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees, said the meeting aligned with years of consultations aimed at strengthening the party. He called for reflection, forgiveness, and a willingness among members to embrace one another.
“This is not the time to be angry. It is time to put on our thinking caps and ensure that we come out of the situation the party is in,” he said, adding that the focus was on the collective interest of the party rather than individuals.
Makarfi stressed that politics remains dynamic, urging party leaders to continually assess national developments and work towards what is best for democracy, the country, and the PDP. He also noted that addressing the media was necessary to clarify the purpose of senior leaders’ engagement and to signal the need for broader consultations within the party.
Lamido said he and Makarfi had long been discussing the state of the country and the fortunes of the PDP. While acknowledging that the party faces challenges, he emphasised that love for democracy, the country, and the party should prevail over personal grievances.
He highlighted issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, corruption, and the health of multi-party democracy as areas where a stronger PDP is needed. Lamido noted that discussions among party leaders focused on resolving disputes, including litigation, and forging a united political front.
“It is not about ego or pride. It is about national sacrifice. We must put the party and the country first,” he said.
Both leaders pledged to continue consultations with other PDP stakeholders to promote reconciliation, rebuild trust, and present a united platform capable of providing credible political leadership for Nigeria.
