Gov Peter Mbah

The Forum of Former Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly has endorsed Governor Peter Mbah to serve a second term in office, citing his administration’s achievements and the need to uphold long-standing principles of equity and fairness in the state’s political system.

The endorsement, made public in a statement on Sunday, was signed by Denge Josef Onoh, chairman of the forum and former spokesman of President Bola Tinubu in the South-East, alongside members including Hon. Emeka Madu and Hon. Johnny Obidinma.

The group explained that their decision was anchored on two main factors: Governor Mbah’s verifiable performance across key sectors, and the principle of rotational equity that has sustained political harmony in Enugu State since 1999.

On governance, the former lawmakers highlighted Mbah’s accomplishments, including:

Construction, rehabilitation, or ongoing work on over 1,000 kilometers of urban, rural, and intercity roads.

Economic growth initiatives aimed at raising the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within eight years through industrialisation, export-focused agriculture (allocating 100,000 hectares per senatorial zone for cash crops), improved transport systems, and revival of moribund assets.

Transformative projects in water supply, security, education, health, waste management, power, judiciary, and human capital development, positioning Enugu as an emerging destination for investment, business, tourism, and living.

“These tangible dividends of democracy have not only improved the quality of life for Ndi Enugu but have also laid a solid foundation for sustainable prosperity,” the forum stated.

Beyond performance, the forum stressed that their endorsement reflects the importance of equity and political stability. They recounted Enugu’s rotational zoning system since 1999:

Enugu East: Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani (1999–2007)

Enugu West: Barr. Sullivan Iheanacho Chime (2007–2015)

Enugu North: Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (2015–2023)

“It is now Enugu East’s turn, the zone that produced Governor Peter Mbah. Equity and fairness demand that he be allowed to complete his second term, just as predecessors from other zones were permitted,” the forum said, warning that a contested second term could disrupt political balance, destabilise zoning arrangements, and fuel rivalries.

The former lawmakers called on all stakeholders—including former local government councillors, former National Assembly members from Enugu, and serving members of the Enugu State House of Assembly—to support Governor Mbah’s second term bid and reject any other aspirants from Enugu East.

“Several states in Nigeria have suffered instability due to single-term tenures or disrupted zoning arrangements. Enugu State must preserve its record of stability through equity. In Peter Mbah we stand—for performance, fairness, and the continued peace and progress of Enugu State,” the forum concluded.
