Market leader warns criminals to stay away from Ogbaru Main Market

By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA – Chief Ndubuisi Ochiogu, President of the Ogbaru Main Market Amalgamated Traders Union (OMMATU), has warned criminals to steer clear of the market or face severe consequences if caught.

Ochiogu stated that the market is now fully fortified with modern detective devices and CCTV cameras, making it difficult for anyone attempting nefarious activities to escape detection. “Any criminal entering the market, day or night, should be prepared to face the consequences,” he said.

He made the remarks while handing over a suspected criminal to the police. The suspect, caught by market security operatives, had broken into several shops weeks earlier but was identified through CCTV footage.

Ochiogu noted that times have changed and criminals no longer have free rein in the market. Even if they manage to evade security temporarily, the market’s advanced surveillance systems will eventually identify and expose them. He cited recent cases of suspects apprehended after being recorded committing crimes, some of whom have already been handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution.

Highlighting his achievements since assuming office three years ago, Ochiogu said his administration has attracted six polling units to the market, allowing traders to exercise their franchise, as seen during the recent Anambra Governorship election. He also credited his administration with installing functional water boreholes, fire extinguishers, solar-powered lights, and CCTV cameras, as well as clearing an N11 million outstanding electricity bill.

“Before our administration, floods and fires frequently damaged goods and disrupted market activities. Today, these challenges have been addressed, ensuring traders can operate safely and securely,” Ochiogu said.
