‘US military can’t arrest me on Nigerian soil’ -Sheikh Gumi dismisses reports of arrest

Published:

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, has dismissed viral reports that he was arrested and taken into custody by United States military operatives shortly after they landed in the country.

The Nigerian social media space was on Thursday, awash with reports and images of the controversial Islamic scholar being arrested with two American soldiers seemingly leading him.

The image rapidly gained traction online, with accompanying claims insinuating that the supposed arrest of the cleric was part of a foreign-led counterterrorism mission on Nigerian soil.

But while reacting to the reports, Gumi described the image as Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated as he was at no time arrested and had not done anything to warrant being arrested by the American soldiers.
Gumi who addressed the purported arrest in a post on his Facebook page late Thursday, said allegations and reports were not only false but outright illogical to think the US Army could just come into the country and arrest him.
“The US Army cannot arrest me in Nigeria, why will the US army come and arrest me in Nigeria, for what reason?” he wrote.
“The image is Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated. Even a layman will know that the image is AI. I have not been arrested,” he emphasized, stressing that the reports making the rounds online were entirely untrue, noting that he remains at liberty in Nigeria.
