10 kidnap victims rescued after gun battle between security team, bandits in Niger

Minna—A joint security team had a breakthrough after gun battle with suspected kidnappers and bandits in Niger State, during which 10 kidnapped victims were rescued.

The Niger State police command spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, while confirming the development, described the incident as a major breakthrough for the security personnel in the state.

The incident, according to him, occurred in Mai-Laka village in Mariga Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

According to him, after fireworks from the two sides, the suspects fled the scene and abandoned some of the abducted victims.

He said: “On Sunday, about 8a.m., joint security team intercepted and engaged some suspected kidnappers/bandits in gun battle at Mai-Laka village along Bangi-Kotonkoro road.

“During the gun battle, the abductors abandoned some kidnapped victims and fled from the scene, which led to the rescue of about 10 victims, who were from Yauri, Dusai, Dogon-Fadama, and Yabawa villages
“Some of the bandits’ motorcycles were also recovered by the team.”

He said, clearance operation was being intensified, and monitoring continues in order to totally clear the area of bandits towards keeping residents of the various communities in the area safe.
