ABUJA: The Board of Trustees BoT of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP has called on members to prioritize institutional caution over political haste, and ensure compliance with court orders regarding the party leadership.

Chairman of the BoT, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa gave the charge on Monday in Abuja at the 85th meeting of the Board.

Addressing the gathering, Ohuabunwa threw his weight behind the Mohammed Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee which is seen as loyal to the Federal Capital Territory FCT minister, Nyesom Wike.

He described the current period as a defining moment for the party, urging the elders and conscience-keepers of the PDP to act as anchors of stability following months of internal turbulence.

Senator Ohuabunwa offered a strong defense for the recent delays in the party’s congresses, a point that has been a significant source of friction among various interest groups.

He argued that the pause was a strategic and necessary move to safeguard the party’s legal standing. He clarified that the delay was not an abdication of responsibility but rather a deliberate act of institutional caution, borne out of respect for pending judicial processes and the supremacy of the rule of law. He noted that history will judge the party kindly for choosing legality over expediency and patience over provocation during this critical moment.

A major highlight of the address was the formal acknowledgment of the judicial clarity regarding the party’s leadership structure.

Senator Ohuabunwa pointed to the recent Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan as a turning point for the embattled party.

He noted that the court has affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman-led National Caretaker Committee, asserting that as elders, it is incumbent upon the BoT to uphold respect for the Judiciary and encourage compliance with lawful decisions.

The Chairman also issued a blunt warning regarding the risks of continued infighting and internal discord.

While acknowledging that the PDP has always accommodated strong opinions and influential actors, he warned that the party’s survival depends on collective interest and institutional discipline rather than personal or sectional advantage.

He cautioned the members that parties collapse not because of opposition strength, but because of internal decay, describing unity as a strategic imperative rather than just a slogan.

National Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, who expressed his gratitude to the BoT for their support, emphasized that the holiday season is officially over and it is now time to focus on the mandate given to the committee to put the party on the right track.

He reinforced the legal standing of his leadership by referencing the recent declaratory judgment by the Ibadan High Court in their favour, stating that the law is simple and unambiguous and the committee shall continue to pursue justice for the great party.
Adding to the call for immediate action, Hon. Mohammed announced that the party is moving beyond legal contests into a phase of active reorganization.

He revealed that any moment from now, the committee shall roll out a timetable for activities regarding outstanding congresses in some states, which are intended to usher in a seamless National Convention.
