A serving Nigerian police sergeant has been taken into custody over allegations that he supplied an AK-47 rifle used in a recent armed robbery in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The arrest was disclosed by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post on X, following the capture of one of the robbery suspects, identified as 30-year-old Justine Gbata from Doka Village.
According to reports, the robbery occurred around 1:00 p.m. on January 24, when armed men attacked a resident of Ankoma Village, Muhammad Danka, and forcefully took away his red Bajaj motorcycle.
Witnesses said the attackers fired several gunshots before fleeing into a nearby forest.
Security sources revealed that a joint team of police officers, local vigilantes and hunters pursued the suspects into the bush, leading to the arrest of Gbata.
Seven spent AK-47 shell casings were reportedly recovered at the scene of the attack.
The arrested suspect sustained injuries during the chase and was taken to the General Hospital in Doma for medical attention.
During interrogation, Gbata allegedly confessed that the rifle used in the robbery was obtained from a serving police sergeant attached to the Daudu Division in Benue State.
The implicated sergeant was identified and subsequently detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Benue State for further investigation.
Police authorities said efforts were ongoing to track down other members of the robbery gang and recover the stolen motorcycle, adding that investigations into the incident were still in progress.
